Final Evaluation: Question 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions for real media products?

In my music magazine I have not challenged the rules of convention as I had put the masthead in the middle of the page. By choosing a model that was from another ethnic background it was a stereotype of the typical models that appear on an urban music magazine. Also by using a medium close up I have not broke any conventions as that is the typical layout of music magazines I have seen.

When I took this photograph I decided to take it from a slightly higher angle as it shows that the rapper is important but can still relate to his audience, this is shown as he is looking directly at the camera. I now would like to point out that when looking at other genres of magazines I could see a huge contrast in the way that the photographs are used. In Indie magazines such as the "Kerrang magazine" as they choose to use long shots and the models are not looking at the camera (do not show any interest whatsoever) in my music magazine I took a medium close up because that was an example of the way RnB magazines are presented.

The mode of address within the professional music magazines that I have observed were that the publishers talked directly to the audience instead of talking to them in third person like what would of been done in a more formal and informative newspaper or magazine. An example of this being in an informative newspaper such as the Guardian or Observer which are aiming their product at adults that work and are interested in the World's issues. Whereas my product is aimed at teenagers interested in the musical culture of RnB.

This is the type of mode of address I was interested in using as I could create a magazine using standard English which would appeal to people aged within my target audiences age range and to people a little bit older depending on the genre they are interested in for example people interested in the genre I chose would not really be appealed to the use of swearing or colloquialisms.

I created his persona by brainstorming different images of RnB celebrities in my head and from them deciding what a typical name would be and whether he could be approachable (a celebrity that is quite humble and down to earth). Also having to make sure the photograph I would use for my front page cover would be the correct size achieving this by going to file edit then going on the option page size then selecting international page size. This meant that I did not challenge any convention as this was a page size that was internationally used which is A4.

When referring back to the feedback I received after I uploaded my survey onto Skype I can come to the conclusion that the majority of the audience preferred hip hop at the time but they listen to RnB regularly listen to that genre this, is why I based my work on the RnB genre. I have also decided to incorporate this graph into my findings as it is from my previous preliminary task and I thought that by incorporating certain things that the audience preferred would be a crucial aspect that I would put in the final outcome of the music magazine.

In deciding to do this I was able to challenge the conventions as the fonts I used were not commonly used within the conventional look of music magazines. To enable that my music magazine looked professional, I decided to download fonts from a website that provided a vast amount of free fonts. I then only downloaded the ones that I thought were effective and eye-catching enough to use throughout the music magazine. When downloading the fonts I later used I checked that they were available to use for personal use, by only using the fonts that had the words free for personal use making the work I produced completely my own as I did not illegally use the copyright protected fonts which the creators of the fonts legally owned. To make sure I did not use the fonts that were available in Photoshop I decided to download so that I did not have the problem of fonts that were serif if I used these fonts it would of made my work look slightly old fashioned and not that appealing.
