Analysis on two magazine contents pages

I was given a task to analysis two contents page's from two different music magazines  based on the same genre of music and I was able to see the differences that both of them had. When initially looking at the Undercover magazine cover I could tell that this magazine, the masthead "mission" informs the reader that something interesting is happening. This magazine consists of 98 pages which is the average amount of pages that a music magazine uses. It has been organised into seven different sections.

  • Regulars (page 6-22)
  • Uncovered (page 24-29)
  • Master ace (page 30-38)
  • Old school (page 42)
  • Industry eyez (page 44-62)
  • Global eyez (page 64-72)
  • Reviews (page 76-98)
When analysing the various sections of the magazine I could see that each section is based on a certain theme for example the second to fourth bullet point are based on different genres of music. The use of the word eyez is important as they did not spell it correctly showing that they were trying to appeal to their younger audience. In this magazine only san cerif font is used it is in capitals (in both black and white fonts). I believe this is due to the importance of the content. The images are presented as three different strips.

Whereas in the Q music magazine  the information is laid out into three sections. In the layout the journalists has decided to use four different fonts using a variation of font colours (red, grey, white) using the same  background colours (this made it more youthful). There was only one large picture of Adele on the contents page which took up nearly the whole of the page.
  • Features (page 14-40)
  • Women in music (page 50-120)
  • Every month (page 6-194)
I found it interesting as the information from the different sections interweave into each section for example Every month, goes into both of the other sections. Dedicating a section to women in music was an interesting aspect to see as normally the seperation of genre is not used. What I found useful was that this music magazine displayed the date that it was published (262/May 2008) among the issue number. Whereas the "Undercover" magazine there was no issue date neither was there a issue number (this connotates that this magazine was not as widely produced).
