Textual analysis of a Music Magazine Double Page Spread

Textual Analysis of a Music Magazine Double Spread

I have chosen to analyze this double page spread as this genre is not usually to my interest and I believe analysing this will give me a greater understanding as to what genre my music magazine will be about. It is from a music magazine called Kerrang which is a popular Rock magazine.

When looking at the layout the main focus is the masthead which appeals the audience in with its clever use of abnormally large fonts and colours that standout from the pitch black background. From the use of the following words “the best” states that the band “My chemical Romance” is achieving its potential (being in white makes it more eye-catching then the rest of the masthead as it is the largest font used.

The way that the masthead is slanted is a connotation that the band is not conformist to anyone and the variation of both red and white fonts make it eye-catching. The Main Coverline tells the readers that the My Chemical Romance have invited Kerrang into the recording studio these denotation that this group are friendly/inviting even though visually appearing rebellious due to the dark clothing they choose to wear.

On the left hand-side of the double page spread there is a picture of a band member that is occupying almost the whole of the page. I believe that this demonstrates the succession of the band throughout the years, it is also something to appeal the target audience (for example if they saw that picture on the cover of the magazine they would be appealed to buy it).

All of the main text is on the right hand side of the spread showing that the journalist decided to keep the layout simple. For example in the second paragraph informs the audience that the band is currently working on their fourth studio album (this informs us that the group are always working to create new albums for their public). The article is formed out of two columns which are organized into seven paragraphs each paragraph talking about a different aspect of the bands lives.

The photographs of the three band members are all taken when there is low high lighting. The photographs were taken in the setting during performances and in the recording studio this is the setting. They are never looking at the camera this suggests that they do not know the photograph is being taken. An example of the dedication they have for their music is the way that Mikey Way is described as a “Bass hero” (which is the journalists biased opinion). In the text box (on bottom right hand corner) the text is suggesting by Gerard’s facile expression (his NVC) that he had “forgotten to lock the bloody front door” which hasn’t seemed to bother him as he continued to sing.
