Textual analysis of College Magazine Front Cover

Textual analysis of college magazine front cover

This magazine front cover consists of a photograph of group of seven guys which is the main image. In the mise-en-scene the lighting is natural coming from outside meaning that that they are standing outside. I feel that they are on the steps of the College entrance.

The masthead is positioned on the top of the page it takes up the whole of it as it is in bold enlarged font. The anchorage is the use using a San Serif font creating an image of formality making it more modern and it creates an eye-catching appeal for the audiences, which wish to read something that is for the older generations.

The non verbal communication is of seven guys are smiling, portraying that they are pleased to be there. Their body language is relaxed all similar except for the band member on the far right hand side, as he has his arms crossed showing that he is not that comfortable or relaxed in this situation.

The costume is that their all wearing everyday clothing (a t-shirt and jeans) making the band members look like their average ordinary people. There are no props as one of them is holding anything.

This photographer has decided to use a wide depth of field to allow the audience to see the whole group and their background. Their faces are slightly blurry. This has not been composed together by Photoshop as this has been photographed in an actual local due to the way this has been set out the photographer has decided the best place to put each person using a wide angle shot the photographer has managed to get all the guys in the shot, they are out of focus due to the setting used.

This contains a rule of thirds as the way the guys are in a certain position creating the rule of thirds as the guys are evenly spaced out to the rest of the magazines information for example the text above, then to the image on the top of the magazine cover (which could be a stage).

The enlarged sign of the cross reminds the viewer that this is a veterinary based college (which is the American’s version of University). The use of the large subtitle informs the audience that these guys have meet up with the band, “They’re with the band”. The fact that all the men are Caucasian makes the audience create a view as to why they did not use people from other races, what was the producer’s message as to why they have not chosen to use any university students that are from different races. This may have been due to the location of the university or the area in which these people live.

By having both the man on the far left and the band right hand side this makes the photograph very symmetrical as are almost the same height. All men are quite low down which is unusual for a magazine cover.

The barcode is on the bottom left hand corner over a white box showing the consumer where it is and it informs the readers that this magazine is for sale. This tells the consumer it has a monthly dateline of when it’s being publicized. Also informing the consumer that the magazine has a price of two dollars this is the average price for a magazine but it depends the brand name for example Vogue (a fashion magazine is three pound plus). It is clearly visible due to its bright colour which is a contrasting to the colours of the guy’s trousers and the dark background. The date of the magazine has been put in another location right underneath the masthead showing that it’s sold in this month at that price (also appearing on the barcode).

The coverlines that are used on the magazine cover appeal the reader to read the magazine for example “It’s a dog’s life” reminds the reader what these people specialise in is animals (giving the audience more information about it inside). The information in the yellow box, gives information about how successful this magazine was in 2008. All the essential important information is in either blue or yellow font pr box with by viewing this I get an idea that this Colleges theme colours are blue and yellow.

The main coverline suggests that this is a college magazine only for higher education students that which to learn more about what is going on the college. The selling line of the “State College”, “Covering the centre region and beyond for 23years” gives a specific period of time that this magazine has been running successfully.

In my opinion the connotation on the front cover suggests that the intelligence of these students is quite high and the passion that they have for caring for animals has a huge etherises as it has in a bold font “96 hours” they will take a huge amount of time to help sick or injured animals.
